Pat Paulsen Vineyards

Founded by Sonoma County vintner Pat Paulsen and his wife Jane in 1971, Pat Paulsen Vineyards garnered tremendous praise and a wide following.  By 1976, Pat Paulsen Vineyards was featured prominently as a vineyard designate, with wineries such as Pedroncelli Winery and Chateau St. Jean.  The flagship wine, an Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon earned many gold medals throughout the years, taking “Best of Show” awards at prestigious competitions.

After establishing the winery as a serious player in the premium wine field, Pat Paulsen Vineyards released some very successful fun wines playing on Pat's dead pan humor, such as Refrigerator White, White House White, and American Gothic Red.  Twenty years later, Pat’s son Montgomery (Monty) Paulsen, a graduate of the UC Davis School of Winemaking and Duke Fuqua School of Business, has revived the winery and the brand.

The winery has moved to Napa, with private event space and offices in Oakland, and a tasting room in Livermore to continue the tradition of producing outstanding wines of great value and serious quality.  Teaming with his partner in crime, Gigi Benson, they aim to top the legacy they've inherited with "each and every bottle."

Meet The Team

MONTGOMERY PAULSEN,  PRESIDENT & WINE MAKER

Monty Paulsen, owner and winemaker of Pat Paulsen Vineyards, is taking over where his father left off.
Active in all areas of the original family business, from the initial vineyard planting to the final sale of the winery, Monty went on to establish himself as an award winning winemaker, entrepreneur, and industry operations expert. He has revived the family brand and brought new life to the business.

His accomplishments creating new product lines, implementing global brands, managing boutique to million-case facilities, and facilitating major transitions, (such as the $105 million sale of Rosenblum Winery to Diageo) provide an inexhaustible resource in his pursuit to make fine wine in a variety of markets. Monty is a frequent lecturer and instructor in enology, winery business management, and sensory analysis.  From prestigious academic institutions to Chinese consortiums he continues to develop training and educational programs for cellar, lab, an winemaking staff.  As a consultant he provides guidance to winemakers and businesses needing assistance streamlining production to enhancing their product and profitability. Building on his deep relationships with vintners and family winemakers, he has rolled out over 18 varietals in less than three years,
garnering over 20 awards, and opened two tasting room venues in the Bay Area.  Obviously, he is driven to top the Pat Paulsen Vineyards legacy with "each and every bottle."

OUR GUEST VINTNERS

DWIGHT BUSALACCHI, MIO VIGNETO

Born into a family of home winemakers from Italy, Dwight studied soil science related to viticulture and timber operations in the 1980's.  He received US and foreign patents for the development of an irrigation control system for vineyards facing limited water resources. After 20 years helping others in the business, he planted his own quarter acre vineyard to study grape quality based on irrigation scheduling. Entrepreneurial as ever, he invented a fermentation controller specifically for white and Rose' wines. 2009 marked his first planting of a commercial vineyard Mio Vigneto, in Lodi.
